Day One At The G7: Iran, Ukraine And Economic Competition Dominate Summit Opening
The first day of the 2026 G7 Summit in Évian-les-Bains, France, opened under heavy security and with several major global issues competing for attention.
President Donald Trump arrived at the summit after announcing a U.S.-Iran agreement that includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy shipping routes. The announcement immediately shifted part of the summit's focus from crisis management to whether the agreement can hold.
At the same time, Ukraine remained a central topic, while economic competitiveness, artificial intelligence, and supply chain security emerged as key themes for the world's leading economies.
Anti-G7 protests in nearby Geneva also reinforced the scale of the security operation surrounding the summit.
