DETROIT — The Democratic primary for Michigan's 13th Congressional District remained undecided early Wednesday, with State Representative Donavan McKinney holding a 52% to 48% lead over incumbent U.S. Representative Shri Thanedar as election officials continued counting ballots.
Although McKinney maintained the advantage, the race had not yet been officially called, with outstanding ballots still to be processed before a winner could be declared.
Tight Race in Metro Detroit
The closely watched contest has drawn significant attention throughout Metro Detroit, where both candidates campaigned on issues including economic opportunity, public safety, affordable housing, healthcare, and neighborhood investment.
As additional precincts reported overnight, McKinney's lead remained intact, though election officials emphasized that unofficial results could continue to change until all eligible ballots are counted.
Challenge to an Incumbent
The race represents one of Michigan's most notable congressional primaries of the 2026 election cycle.
McKinney, currently serving in the Michigan House of Representatives, challenged Thanedar, who has represented the district in Congress since 2023.
Political observers noted that the contest reflected differing priorities within the Democratic Party while also highlighting growing interest in local leadership and community-focused issues.
Count Continues
Election officials continued processing absentee ballots and late-reporting precincts Wednesday morning.
Until the remaining votes are tabulated, no official winner has been declared.
Both campaigns have encouraged supporters to remain patient while the counting process continues.
Looking Ahead
Once certified, the Democratic nominee will advance to the November general election.
Given the district's strong Democratic voting history, political analysts suggest the primary winner is likely to enter the general election as the favorite, although the election will ultimately be decided by voters in November.
Open Road Radio will continue monitoring the count and provide updates as soon as election officials announce an official result.
