After multiple major water main failures over the past several years, the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) is moving forward with an ambitious long-term strategy to strengthen one of Southeast Michigan's most critical pieces of water infrastructure. The proposed reliability plan targets the aging transmission main along 14 Mile Road, aiming to reduce future disruptions while improving water service for hundreds of thousands of residents.
The announcement follows a series of high-profile water main breaks that have affected communities across Oakland County, causing road closures, flooding, boil water advisories, and costly emergency repairs.
A Critical Water Line With a History of Failures
The 14 Mile Road transmission main serves as an important component of GLWA's regional drinking water network.
Officials say the pipeline has experienced four major breaks in the past seven years, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive long-term solution rather than repeated emergency repairs.
Recent failures have impacted communities including:
- Novi
- Walled Lake
- Commerce Township
- Wixom
- Farmington Hills
Previous breaks resulted in temporary water pressure issues, boil water advisories, flooding, and significant traffic disruptions throughout the area.
An $81 Million Reliability Investment
GLWA has announced plans for an approximately $81 million infrastructure project designed to improve the long-term reliability of the transmission main.
Construction is currently expected to begin in November 2026 and will focus on replacing vulnerable sections of the aging pipeline while modernizing key portions of the system.
The project builds upon emergency work completed earlier this year, when GLWA invested $12.8 million to replace and reinforce damaged sections of the 42-inch transmission main following previous failures. That work also included the installation of Michigan's first acoustic fiber-optic monitoring system on a water transmission line to help detect internal wire breaks before they become catastrophic failures.
Building a More Resilient Water System
GLWA says the goal is to move away from reactive emergency repairs toward proactive infrastructure management.
The authority's broader Linear System Integrity Program (LSIP) was launched to assess and rehabilitate aging water transmission mains across Southeast Michigan before failures occur. The initiative includes condition assessments, targeted pipeline renewal, and advanced monitoring technologies to improve long-term reliability.
