MICHIGAN — A major data center project backed by Oracle and OpenAI has applied for a state permit that would allow it to discharge treated wastewater into the Saline River, marking another significant milestone in the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure in the United States.
The proposed discharge permit is currently under review by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). Officials stress that any wastewater released into the river would first undergo treatment and would be required to meet state and federal environmental standards before discharge.

According to permit documents, the facility is seeking authorization to release treated industrial wastewater generated by cooling and operational processes associated with the data center.
