A Michigan State Police trooper was hospitalized Sunday after a suspected impaired driver slammed into a patrol vehicle while officers were investigating an earlier crash along Interstate 96 in Detroit.
Authorities said troopers had responded to a previous collision along the I-96 service drive near Outer Drive. The freeway area had partially closed as officers worked to document the crash and direct traffic safely around the scene.
While emergency lights were activated and patrol vehicles were positioned to protect investigators working on the roadway, a passenger vehicle reportedly failed to slow down and struck a marked Michigan State Police cruiser. The impact caused significant damage to the patrol vehicle and injured the trooper at the scene.
Emergency medical personnel transported the injured trooper to a nearby hospital where officials said the injuries were considered non-life-threatening. Investigators believe the driver who struck the patrol vehicle may have been impaired at the time of the crash.
Michigan State Police officials emphasized that drivers must slow down and move over when approaching emergency vehicles stopped along Michigan highways. The agency continues to investigate the incident and potential charges against the driver involved.
