Today, we want to share an important update regarding the future availability of Open Road Radio within the United Kingdom.
Beginning June 1, 2026, our live radio stream will no longer be officially accessible in the UK through standard streaming distribution.
This decision was not made lightly.
Over time, the licensing and royalty-related costs connected to UK streaming availability have increased significantly. As an independent station still in the early stages of growth, we have to carefully balance:
- operational sustainability,
- licensing requirements,
- infrastructure costs,
- and the long-term future of our project.
Unfortunately, the financial burden connected to maintaining official UK stream distribution has now reached a point where it is no longer realistically sustainable for us at our current stage.
This Does NOT Affect Our News PlatformWe also want to make absolutely clear that this change only affects the live radio stream itself.
Our:
- news website,
- Detroit reporting,
- editorials,
- feature stories,
- social media pages,
-
and online content
will remain fully accessible internationally — including within the United Kingdom.
Everyone will still be able to:
- visit our website,
- read our articles,
- follow Detroit news,
- and stay connected with Open Road Radio online.
Our broader vision for expanding Open Road Radio as a Detroit-focused digital media platform remains fully active and unchanged.
Our Focus Remains Detroit And The United StatesFrom the very beginning, Open Road Radio was built around:
- Detroit,
- American culture,
- U.S.-focused programming,
- and a vision centered primarily on American audiences and news coverage.
Over time, however, we were genuinely surprised and honored to see listeners joining us from:
- the United Kingdom,
- Europe,
- and other international regions around the world.
Even though our core focus remains the United States, it has always meant a lot to us knowing people from other countries discovered and supported our station along the way.
Especially during our very first year as an independent project, every listener mattered to us far more than people may realize.
A Personal Thank You To Our UK ListenersTo everyone from the United Kingdom who listened to Open Road Radio during this first chapter of our journey:
Thank you.
We are still a young independent station, and during this very first year of building Open Road Radio, seeing listeners tune in from the UK was something we honestly never expected when this project first started.
Whether you listened occasionally, followed our news coverage regularly, tuned in during late nights, or simply discovered us randomly online — we truly appreciate every single person who spent time with our station.
For a small independent broadcaster, international listeners always stood out to us because it reminded us that Open Road Radio was reaching people far beyond Detroit and far beyond what we originally imagined possible in our first year.
Some listeners may still continue accessing the stream through alternative technical methods, including VPN services, although we will no longer officially distribute the stream within the UK market itself.
No matter what happens moving forward, we genuinely want to say:
Rising Costs Are Affecting Many Independent BroadcastersThank you for being part of the first year of Open Road Radio.
The reality is that many smaller independent stations worldwide are currently facing similar challenges.
Streaming rights, licensing structures, and international royalty systems have become increasingly expensive in recent years — especially for broadcasters operating across multiple countries and regions.
For independent projects without major corporate backing, these costs can quickly become difficult to justify financially.
As a result, many online stations are being forced to:
- reduce international availability,
- limit certain regions,
- or restructure how their streams are distributed globally.
While disappointing, this adjustment helps us continue focusing resources on:
- improving our platform,
- expanding our Detroit coverage,
- strengthening our infrastructure,
- and securing the long-term future of Open Road Radio itself.
Although the UK broadcast stream may soon officially come to an end, Open Road Radio itself continues moving forward.
We remain committed to:
- Detroit-focused journalism,
- independent reporting,
- music programming,
- feature stories,
- community coverage,
- and growing our broader media platform throughout 2026 and beyond.
Detroit remains at the center of our vision.
And to everyone who has supported us — whether from Detroit, elsewhere in the United States, the United Kingdom, or anywhere else in the world:
Thank you for listening.
